AMLD6 (Sixth Anti-Money Laundering Directive)
Checked against the official texts on .
AMLD6 is Directive (EU) 2024/1640, the sixth EU Anti-Money Laundering Directive. It sets what Member States must organise — central beneficial ownership registers, bank account registers, financial intelligence units and national supervision — and must be transposed into national law by 10 July 2027. The obligations of firms themselves sit in the AMLR.
Also called: the sixth AML Directive. Beware the name: "6AMLD" is also widely used for Directive (EU) 2018/1673 on combating money laundering by criminal law, which harmonised money-laundering offences and had to be transposed by 3 December 2020. Always check which instrument a source means.
Why it matters for PSPs and EMIs
AMLD6 shapes the institutions a payment institution deals with: the supervisor that inspects it, the financial intelligence unit that receives its reports, and the beneficial ownership register it must consult and correct. Because it is a directive, the practical detail will still differ by Member State.
